You Can't Hit It If You Can't See It!

Good optics start with a strong precision base. Mass produced, off-the-shelf bases are often the cause of problems sighting in a rifle. A 0.001" error in the base can result in 1 minute-of-angle shift in your optics. This error subtracts from your range of adjustments. Poor quality bases and rings can result in not being able to sight in your rifle at all.

Pictured is an ALS Industries Long Range Tapered Base, which has a 20 MOA forward declination. With this base, my 100 yard zero is near the bottom of my scopes elevation adjustment. This allows me use virtually all of the scopes range for elevation corrections. The base is also precision machined to allow the windage adjustment to be very close to mechanical center. This is assuming that the receiver is drilled and tapped on the centerline. Cross-slots prevent the Weaver-style rings from shifting under recoil. The base was designed by a good friend of mine who is a police sniper and an international competitor. It is machined by another good friend of mine, Tony Sporri of ALS Industries.

Leupold 6.5-20x40mm

This picture shows a Leupold 6.5-20x40mm EFR scope mounted in Leupold Mark 4 1" Medium rings and attached to the base. The side nut is torqued to 65 inch-pounds and absolutely will not shift. The ring caps have 4 screws each which, when torqued to 20 inch-pounds, hold the scope securely. The base is torqued to the receiver at 25 inch-pounds.

This is an ALS long-action high base. It has a 20 moa declination and is Parkerized to match the 700 PSS receiver it is mounted on. The rings are Weaver 4x4 low height.

Leupold 4.5-14x50mm

Here is a Leupold 4.5-14x50mm LRT (Long Range Tactical) scope mounted in Medium height 30mm Mark 4 rings. The base is a high tapered base by ALS Industries. This combination gives the same tube height as a low base with high rings, but is much stronger. With the adjustment range of the turrets in a 30mm tube, a tapered base is not really needed to reach 1000 yds. Also note the turret knobs. These are special M1 turrets that were installed by Dick Thomas of Premier Reticles. They provide a positive grip and are easier to read than the standard target knobs. They are also waterproof and don't require caps to protect them.

The ALS base is available in both low and medium heights, and for long and short action Remington 700's. If you want to order one,  contact Capt. JW Huskey at jhuskey@ci.opelika.al.us

This is a Sightron 6-24x42mm scope. It is excellent both optically and mechanically. They are equal to the Leupold scopes I own, at half their price. It features 1/8 moa target turrets and a mil-dot reticle that is accurate at 24x.

300-2.jpg

This is a Bausch & Lomb Elite 3200 4-12x40mm AO scope. This is about the best $250 hunting scope you will find. The Rainguard coating works. This scope absolutely will not fog. Image is clear and sharp. It is mounted in Mounting Solutions Plus 1" rings on an ALS long action low base.

Burris 6-24x44mm

Here is a Burris Signature 6-24x44mm Target dot reticle scope and Burris Signature .22 High rings mounted on a 3/8" dovetail grooved rimfire receiver. This is an excellent target/varmint scope but due to its length and weight, it's a poor choice for a "walking gun". Plus, because it has very limited range of elevation and windage adjustment, it's a poor choice as a long range target scope.

Sightron 6-24x42mm

This is a Sightron 6-24x42mm scope with a duplex reticle. It is mounted in Burris .22 Deluxe high 1" rings. They also use the 3/8" dovetail groove for rimfire receivers. This is also an excellent scope and the good thing about it is that, at a little over $300, it's a bargain. The reticle is a little thick for serious benchrest competition but it's great for squirrels and beanfield hunting. I also have a Sightron 6-24x42mm mounted on my 700 Police in .300 Win Mag as well as a Sightron 20-50x80mm spotting scope.

Here's an Eagle Industries Scope Cover with Muzzle Protector. Good stuff for protecting your investment.
